Intro Lesson: Exploration. Yesterday we talked about a bicycle having advantages and disadvantages. How does it compare to walking or driving? One thing it’s good at is letting you explore, because you can go farther than walking, but not too fast to see what’s around you, which can be a problem in a car.Word of the Day: exploration
(from Latin ex- = out + plorare = utter a cry)
Trip: After our lesson of the day, we tuned up the bikes: Saphire learned how to pump up her tires as you can see in the photos. We departed from the Isaacs center to explore areas along the East side of Manhattan. The riders received their Cyclopedia t-shirts, but it was too chilly to wear them. After navigating the stairs that interrupt the bike path south of Carl Schurtz Park, we passed a sandy dog park near the animal hospital, then took a break at the “roller coaster” asphalt dog park at the top of the hill under the 59th Street Bridge. Roosevelt Island to the east and the tram above our heads. Heading onto Sutton place Jacob got a little too energetic heading up the hill and banged his knee on his bike. Inspection revealed no visible damage, so Saphire still wins the prize for bodily harm so far. We headed to the bottom of Sutton place, which is really an extension of Avenue A in the East Village, and it also goes by York Avenue and Pleasant Avenue as the eastern coastline dips in and out: hence our lesson on “Aka Ave A”. We worked our way back up, checking out the dead end streets with small parks overlooking the East River. Jacob made a new friend, a Yorkie mix by the name of Cooper. Raheem fell in love with a bronze statue of a boar he called, “Thelma”. The riders took several pictures of seagulls, buildings with stunning features, and still wanted more!! So in true Cyclopedia fashion we kept our exploration going and headed towards the 59thStreet Bridge. Though we only made it half way up the bridge, riders felt a sense of accomplishment. Riders took pictures of the Roosevelt Island Tram and the background of the East River. Day 2 of the Pilot Program rocked!!
