Intro Lesson: What good is a bicycle? Our riders had several opinions: bicycles are faster than walking but slower than driving; they’re cheaper than driving but more expensive than walking; they’re better for the environment than driving, but you can’t go as far. All good points. Over these summer weeks we’ll put the bicycle to the test.

Word of the Day: bicycle
(from Greek bi = two + kýklos = wheel)

Time Trials:
First day of the summer program! The goal of today was to establish the kids’ baseline coming into the program so that at the end of the summer they can have some evidence-based bragging rights! After the short walk from the school to the Stanley Isaac’s Center, the day began by measuring everyone’s heights and weights. From there, we headed back to the school see how fast we could ride a mile. Fifteen laps around the track later and Sabian proved himself a Speedy Gonzalez. Next we toyed around a bit on the website giving the kids access to it so they can help mold it into their own. After digging through the Isaac’s Center storage unit and finding some pretty freaky (and scary!) Halloween props, we ended the day with a good ol’ fashioned game of Running Bases. We couldn’t do a bike ride today because the bikes still had to be fine tuned a bit, but thanks to Cappy’s vast knowledge of bikes we are all geared up (pun intended) and ready to pound the pavement on Thursday!
This trip was on July 10, 2012
Programming time: 4 hours
Participants: Calvin Debrecourt, Destinee Moore, Jasmine Romero, Sabian Ramadhin, Felix Santos
