Intro Lesson: The power of bicycles. On the first two days we discussed the pros and cons of bicycles compared to walking or driving. Bicycles are cheaper than cars, but more expensive than walking. Bicycles take you farther than walking, but not as far as cars. Today we focused on some of the specific qualities of bicycles. Bicycles are three times as efficient as walking, which means you have the power of three people when you ride. The fastest person on a bike went 82 mph (which is over the speed limit on a highway!). And the energy in a gallon of gas takes a car 10 miles in an SUV or 50 miles in a hybrid, but that same energy in the form of food calories will take you 1000 miles on a bike. Bicycles are great for journeys.Word of the Day: journey (from Latin diurnāta = a day’s work or a day’s time) Though we use the word to describe the travel from one place to another, it more literally refers to the time spent or the effort made in doing so. All these are relevant to a bicycle journey, since we will be spending our own time and energy to get to our destination. Trip: Our final trip of the Pilot program was to Randall’s and Ward’s island. Riders took their last picture in front of our Cyclopedia headquarters (IsaacsCenter) before the journey. We then strapped on our helmets for the last time and headed out on the road. Riders were on the East River bike path cycling towards theTriboroughBridge. We were so excited crossing the bridge in anticipation to arrive on the island. Once we were settled, riders were ready to discover the treasures that lie on the land. Our first stop was to theBronxRiverthat acts as a borderline betweenManhattanand theBronx. Riders were amazed that they were literally less than 10 feet away from theBronx, and did not have to use mass transit to get there. Our next stop was to Icahn stadium where Usain Bolt broke the 100m dash record!! Riders took out their cameras to take pictures of the stadium and a map we found. Our crew then headed to Hell’s gate, took more pictures of the water, the bridge, and Queens. Our riders had a blast in this trip. At the salt marsh, Raheem had a wild goose chase, literally with a Canadian goose named Larry. We all had a good laugh. The crew had such a great time on Randall’s/Ward’s Island, but sadly we had to go return back to headquarters. Cyclopedia has given these students the opportunity to explore, discover, and learn about the beautiful city they live in. This trip was on April 11, 2012 Trip distance: 10.2 miles Programming time: 4 hours Participants: Raheem Jacobs, Tyler Joseph, Jacob Mehl, Saphire Small, Kalima Walker Rider Photos Raheem Jacobs Tyler Joseph Jacob Mehl Saphire Small Kalima Walker Leaders: Cappy Collins, Onyx Salvador, Davon McCullers
